A great little program that takes a lot of the guess work out of digital photography. It’s all about making beautiful images from your digital ones. It has advanced features that will make you a better photographer, and it’s very easy to use.

If you’re looking for something to ease the pain of taking pictures and converting your images into readable, editable files, then you need Adobe Photoshop. It’s a great program, and it’s not a lot to learn. If you’re a bit more experienced with computers, then you might be able to make it do many other things as well.

The app isn’t limited just to reviewing. Sketch makes it easy to make edits and add rich annotations to the current image. Create your file in a way where you can update individual parts, keep a record of the history, then view changes on a timeline so you can see what’s been done and when modifications were made.

Sketch is a new product that is given away with the purchase of Adobe Photoshop for iOS, but it’s far from a hidden gem. Drawing and painting on the iPad has long been possible with many apps and in some cases, getting a decent result. In most cases, however, the experience was clunky and frustrating. Adobe has gone back to the drawing board with Adobe Photoshop Sketch, which bridges the gap between artistic drawing and collaborative editing. The app makes keeping track of everything a lot easier, and viewing it on a device is intuitive and quick. It’s a new way of working in a world where many of us are working remotely. As such, it is also younger siblings of each other, including apps in the Aesop suite, and Adobe Illustrator Touch. To learn more, I spent some time with Adobe Photoshop Sketch and see how it works compared to both Adobe’s prior efforts, as well as current competing apps.

Digital photography is in its infancy, so Photoshop Lightroom, Apple’s Aperture and other similar programs are mere baby steps. Adobe demonstrated by far the best features from the latest version available at the time of this review, but it will be a while before we see the rest of the major players follow suit. I knew from the start that my review would be somewhat superficial when it came to Photoshop Lightroom. That said, I had grand plans to provide you with a much more in-depth look at the program. Unfortunately, our guest writer was not able to do that, and I couldn’t have done it better myself.



In Photoshop, you can use one of its tools to make simple adjustments, such as converting a photograph into black and white or adding a vignette to a shot. You can also use a tool called the Healing Brush to eliminate blemishes or restore details or even craft entire images after-the-fact. With the Adjustment panel, you can make more in-depth changes, such as adjusting the sharpness and color of an image. You can also use black-and-white adjustments and color corrections to give your images a kind of digital depth of field.

You can use Photoshop to change the look and feel of a file by adding, removing, or editing layers from an image. A layer is like a layer in a z-order stacked composition. It’s the structure and shape of the picture that you see when you zoom in on an image. Layers are the foundation of any image, always contained within the image file. A layer can contain text, graphics, layer styles (shapes, patterns, gradients and fills), masking, and other information—all with which you can manipulate, change, hide, and reveal.

While contour matching is essentially the same as making a matte, you can use it to quicken the process of retouching an image in Photoshop: In the Selection tool, click on a subject—such as the neck of a model—to mark the area that needs attention. Choose a color that you want to apply to your image entirely, and then use the Adjustment tool to fine-tune that color. Select either Apply All or Apply To All to change the color for the entire image. In the resulting dialog box, you can change the color’s hue, saturation, brightness, darkness, and white point. You can fine-tune the color in thousands of different ways with the Adjustment tool.

Photoshop Elements and Photoshop both welcome the new Apple W1 chip in the iPad Pro. Photoshop CS6, 7, and Lightroom 7 on both platforms have updates to take advantage of that. How well those updates work will depend on a variety of factors including how well versions 4 and 5 are embraced (and rolled in over years 2 and 3) and how well version 6 works. It will also be interesting to see if Adobe does an official version for the iPad Pro.
