I agree. I’m glad other than “the way it is done” — there are lots of great things in Lightroom that have not changed except for the new version upgrade. I already have all my images and presets on this drive and running Lightroom 4. I’ve been using Lightroom ever since PS CS2 came out and now it’s available as a standalone app. I really don’t see any reason to have to purchase another copy of Lightroom, but I guess it is what it is if you want to continue to own an Apple product.

If you don’t have your presets/actions on a single drive, you’ll always have to worry where you put your files. With this in mind, I think that the $49 is totally worth it. I can’t wait to see how everything will play out when I update to Lightroom 5.2. I’m so glad that Adobe provided a.pkg file. It always gives me the ability to have more than 100 applications on my Mac.

There are so many other things you can do with it. It’s got motion-picture capabilities (for example, making short film production selections), a pretty comprehensive RAW editor, an amazing photo manager (that actually Pixlr , which will rival Elements as a photo retouching software), a theme editor , terrific image publishing capabilities, and much more.

The ability to make custom styles really allows you to embellish your photos and enhance them. So this is a great tool for people who want to change the look of recurring images. You can do this in two ways: by making new styles, or by modifying existing ones. In the following example, I’ve made a custom style for the tree in the background and then applied that style to an image of a “Seasonal” Christmas tree. Once you’ve finished editing, press the << key on your keyboard to preview your changes. You can modify and keep that customized style, or you can make a new style and use your newly created style.

In some cases, a layer mask isn’t necessary once you’ve adjusted a picture element. You control the painting process by leaving some pixels transparent. No masks needed. To illustrate, I’m going to invite you to consider a photo in which a bright sky and dark foreground land meet at the horizon like a chalk line. You can tweak the color of the top and bottom of that line by painting it with a hard-edged brush, using a Smart Object, or with a vignette effect.

You can create borders around objects in a photo as well as Edges. The Edges feature works with the Pen tool, the Clone Stamp tool, and the Healing brush, or the Eraser tool. When you brush with the Healing Brush, the edges of a painting are erased in the direction you paint.

Once you get past some of the basics, you’ll find Photoshop’s interface to be pretty intuitive. Start by using the Eraser tool, the Opacity slider, and the Brightness/Contrast slider to “clean up” whites and blacks; then create a Levels adjustment layer and brighten up color-deficient areas. Let the Pen tool’s cool, non-linear brush quickly transform a tiny area, like an eye or nose or ear, by painting it in new colors. Change the perspective of a photo by panning an object in the frame. To tint an image, select the layer containing the object you’d like to enhance, and choose Layer→New Adjustment Layer→Colorize. (To tint a photo, you need to have a color LAB monitor, rather than a grayscale monitor). Also use Adjustment Layers to control all your tonal effects, then desaturate or sharpen areas you like.
